Grotesque Street Photography by Martin Parr
When asked about his photography, Martin Parr quotes: “People are funny, there’s no question about that. How can you not laugh at what’s going on in the world?”
Martin Parr is an English photographer who has been taking photos for 40 years. His life revolves around his photography, and when he’s not out and about taking photos, he is either curating or taking part in worldwide photographic community, Magnum Photos.
Parr’s photography style is very peculiar. He likes to make powerful statements about society, but he always finds a way to turn his photos into humorous and quirky works of art. Almost every photo Parr has taken has a grotesque and exaggerated feel to it, but that’s what gives his photos their signature comical look.
Having a hyperactive personality, one of his favourite topics in photography is boredom as it is a subject he does not relate to. He is fascinated with taking photos of people that could come across as having “empty lives”. He focuses on sets or mini projects rather than individual photos as he believes that sets are the best way to tell a story through photography – which is what photojournalism is all about.
